SCHOOLS
Due to the current Coronavirus situation, we are changing our education programme for September 2020. Please read on for details.
Yes, you can still visit the museum with your school group!
Amberley Museum is a large, mostly open-air site with plenty of space to explore at a safe distance from other visitors, as well as a dedicated lunch/bag storage space. We have been open to the public since late July and have been awarded Visit England’s ‘Good To Go’ standard for our COVID-19 precautions.
Visits can be reserved from Wednesday to Friday, though we are currently allowing only 30 children on site each day. This means that larger schools will need to visit over a number of days. You have a number of options:
- We will continue to run our ‘Journeys’ workshop (Reception & KS1-2) on the history of transport with minor alterations.
- You are welcome to reserve a self-led visit. Due to constrained space in the Milne Hall (electricity) and Connected Earth (telecommunications) buildings, visits to these areas will be by 45-minute appointment only, during which time your school group will have sole use of them (for no extra charge). We are unable to offer demonstrations of our high-voltage generators at this time.
- Self-led resources will be available to accompany your visit to the Milne Hall and Connected Earth buildings, at the additional charge of £30 per class.
All activities will be risk-assessed for COVID-19 (details provided on enquiry). As per normal, teacher pre-visits are recommended and can be arranged at the time of booking.
If you need to remain at school…
You can still benefit from our collections by reserving a loan box of mystery objects from the past, based on our ‘Ingenious Inventions’ workshop. We are currently formulating the practicalities for this service: please contact us for more details.
We are also planning to offer some online resources soon.
If you are unable to engage with us at this time but hope to do so in the near future, why not join our Teacher Panel and help us develop resources that suit your needs as the public health situation develops?
For all education enquiries, please contact our Learning Officer at education@amberleymuseum.co.uk.
Planning your school visit
DID YOU KNOW? 1 in 5 schools in and around the South Downs National Park is eligible to apply for a travel grant of up to £300 to visit Amberley Museum. To find out more, click here.
All school groups can make use of our undercover lunch spaces and gift shop, and take a ride on our narrow-gauge railway. Please note, due to COVID-19 restrictions, our on-site shuttle bus is not currently running.
Our ample, free car/coach parking and position adjacent to Amberley mainline train station makes us a practical choice for a fuss-free day out.
Due to the historical nature of some of our exhibits and spaces, not all areas of the site are wheelchair accessible. If there are any accessibility needs within your group, please let us know so we can advise you further.
For further information on how to book, see the ‘Booking & Prices’ tab or email education@amberleymuseum.co.uk.

Our inspiring natural setting, varied working exhibits and volunteer welcome make us a popular choice among further education colleges, universities, language schools, uniformed and home-schooling groups.
We can offer you a bespoke visit relating to your area of choice, involving talks, demonstrations and often hands-on experiences, depending on your numbers and their effect on our necessary COVID-19 precautions.
We are also keen to offer work experience and volunteering opportunities to young people who wish to build up their skills, whether in heritage crafts and trades or in the museum sector.
To discuss what we could do for you, please contact us at education@amberleymuseum.co.uk.
